WAMDII observation of an auroral atmosphere wave event
Field tests of WAMDII (Wide Angle Michelson Doppler Imaging Interferometer) on February 23 to 24, 1984 in Saskatoon produced wind images of the aurora that show well defined wave structures in lambda 5577. Wavelengths and velocities of these structures suggest an acoustic-gravity wave interpretation, but their short duration warrants their being termed an event. The Dopplergrams are presented with emphasis on the interpretation of the waves and a discussion of possible sources
Guide to the evaluation of human exposure to noise from large wind turbines
Guidance for evaluating human exposure to wind turbine noise is provided and includes consideration of the source characteristics, the propagation to the receiver location, and the exposure of the receiver to the noise. The criteria for evaluation of human exposure are based on comparisons of the noise at the receiver location with the human perception thresholds for wind turbine noise and noise-induced building vibrations in the presence of background noise
Phenomenology of the minimal B-L extension of the Standard Model
We present the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) discovery potential in the
and heavy neutrino sectors of a enlarged Standard Model also
encompassing three heavy Majorana neutrinos. This model exhibits novel
signatures at the LHC, the most interesting arising from a decay chain
involving heavy neutrinos, eventually decaying into leptons and jets. In
particular, this signature allows one to measure the and heavy neutrino
masses involved. In addition, over a large region of parameter space, the heavy
neutrinos are rather long-lived particles producing distinctive displaced
vertices that can be seen in the detectors. Lastly, the simultaneous
measurement of both the heavy neutrino mass and decay length enables an
estimate of the absolute mass of the parent light neutrino. For completeness,
we will also compare the LHC and a future Linear Collider (LC) discovery

Diabatic balance model for the equatorial atmosphere
Using an asymptotic expansion, a balance model is derived for the shallow-water equations (SWE) on the equatorial beta-plane that is valid for planetary-scale equatorial dynamics and includes Kelvin waves. In contrast to many theories of tropical dynamics, neither a strict balance between diabatic heating and vertical motion nor a small Froude number is required. Instead, the expansion is based on the smallness of the ratio of meridional to zonal length scales, which can also be interpreted as a separation in time scale. The leading-order model is characterized by a semigeostrophic balance between the zonal wind and meridional pressure gradient, while the meridional wind v vanishes; the model is thus asymptotically nondivergent,
and the nonzero correction to v can be found at the next order. Importantly for applications, the diagnostic balance relations are linear for winds when inferring the wind field from mass observations and the winds can be diagnosed without direct observations of diabatic heating. The accuracy of the model is investigated through a set of numerical examples. These examples show that the diagnostic balance relations can remain valid even when the dynamics do not, and the balance dynamics can capture the slow

Localness in climate change
Climate change is a global problem, yet it is experienced at the local scale, in ways that are both place-specific and specific to the accidents of weather history. This article takes the dichotomy between the global and the local as a starting point to develop a critique of the normative approach within climate science, which is global in various ways and thereby fails to bring meaning to the local. The article discusses the ethical choices implicit in the current paradigm of climate prediction, how irreducible uncertainty at the local scale can be managed by suitable reframing of the scientific questions, and some particular epistemic considerations that apply to climate change in the global South. The article argues for an elevation of the narrative and for a demotion of the probabilistic from its place of privilege in the construction and communication of our understanding of global warming and its local consequences
The SOX11 transcription factor is a critical regulator of basal-like breast cancer growth, invasion, and basal-like gene expression.
Basal-like breast cancers (BLBCs) are aggressive breast cancers associated with poor survival. Defining the key drivers of BLBC growth will allow identification of molecules for targeted therapy. In this study, we performed a primary screen integrating multiple assays that compare transcription factor expression and activity in BLBC and non-BLBC at the RNA, DNA, and protein levels. This integrated screen identified 33 transcription factors that were elevated in BLBC in multiple assays comparing mRNA expression, DNA cis-element sequences, or protein DNA-binding activity. In a secondary screen to identify transcription factors critical for BLBC cell growth, 8 of the 33 candidate transcription factors (TFs) were found to be necessary for growth in at least two of three BLBC cell lines. Of these 8 transcription factors, SOX11 was the only transcription factor required for BLBC growth, but not for growth of non-BLBC cells. Our studies demonstrate that SOX11 is a critical regulator of multiple BLBC phenotypes, including growth, migration, invasion, and expression of signature BLBC genes. High SOX11 expression was also found to be an independent prognostic indicator of poor survival in women with breast cancer. These results identify SOX11 as a potential target for the treatment of BLBC, the most aggressive form of breast cancer
